Hampton-Pinckney, Greenville, SC

Located in Greenville South Carolina Hampton-Pinckney is one of the oldest neighborhoods in all of Greenville SC.  This is where at the turn of the 19th century the textile industry bloomed and lasted until the 1920’s.  One of the most interesting facts about Hampton-Pinckney Greenville SC is that this was the FIRST area in which a trolley car was installed (1899) and opened for business in 1901.  Ever since 1977 this neighborhood was put into the National Register of Historic Places.
The area was original purchased in 1815 by Vardry McBee who spent $27,550 for the 11,028 areas of land which is now the dead center of Greenville SC.  He had bought the land with homes of developing it into a frontier village.  This played a huge importance in the developing what is now downtown Greenville.  It’s goes without saying his donations of strips of land also helped put in the cities first 4 churches as well as a Male and Female Academy for its residents.  McBee’s son was the first to build a home in the area before the Civil War.  In the 1890s it was noted that McBee had willed his land to the family and then subdivided it into residential lots.  The importance of Cotton growing and selling was vital to the success of the community since the near by railroad terminal gave access to new parts of the country.

This was also a period in Greenvilles history where there was rapid expansion of the textile industry.  Today Hampton-Pinckney is Historic District and one of the oldest neighborhoods in Greenville.  During the First World War the production of the soldiers uniforms kept the mill industry booming as war materials were needed to keep War Efforts funded.  Although Hampton-Pinckney was a thriving neighborhood there were other neighborhoods taking root and beginning to thrive soon after.  Since it had been named an Historic neighbor in 1977 it became the first locally designated Preservation Overlay District in all of Greenville.

A few of the schools located in the area are: Legacy Charter School and A.J. Whittenburg Elementary School.  It’s also a great place to buy a home, with an increase of 6.3% in homes value over the past 12 months its a great place to raise a family.
